Basically it was a cool November day, we had been filming more or less every week for the past 3 months and were getting ready to take a bit of a break in production over the coming winter. We probably should have quit the previous week though, as on this day no one showed up excited about filming for whatever reason.
Once we all met up, got the onscreen talents, Kyle and Amrit, into costume, and went out to location, we were already within the final hours of the day. We had to rush as we had very limited lighting. After a long walk up a big forested hill, motivation dropped more and more. We got through all the first shots fairly quick, but then the action sequence came.
The idea was to have Sensei Bob kick the sword from Ninja Death Warrior's hand as he was swinging down. However, things didn't quite turn out that way as Amrit chopped his sword down half a second too soon. Kyle continued the sequence, throwing a mighty front kick, but instead of his foot making contact with the sword, his head did.
We all had moments of shock as Kyle went down, seemingly in slow motion. Amrit quickly dropped his sword and started rubbing Kyle's head, and the camera was shut off at that point. Basically what followed was speechlessness from both actors, Ryan Dhanraj and myself (Ryan Golding), and repeated checking of Kyle's skull. There was a bit of blood, but luckily not much damage was done. Kyle did however make a rather hilarious comment about how he hoped his wound wouldn't get infected, leaving him with a deformed shaped head for the rest of his life. Think Sloth from Goonies!
I felt that this would be the end of all Sensei Bob and Ninja Death Warrior, "Random Ninja Attacks" productions, and as of this date, it still has been. However I'm sure we will get back to it once again, although we'll probably use less sword next time around. Even though that sword was a dull and decorative one, it was still very heavy. Thankfully Amrit truly has ninja-like reflexes, and was able to retract a little, immediately after the impact, instead of following through.
Afterwards, we went out to a restaurant and all was well. We decided then that this would be a great blooper to post on the channel, and apparently we were right. As of this moment it has received the most hits of any of the 160 plus videos currently on our channel, with some help from our friend/fellow Ophion Digital member Jay Fyfe, who posted it in Fail Blog.
Things To Point Out - Note that Ninja Death Warrior has some blue clothing poking out from his black Ninja uniform. Amrit showed up that day with a bright blue shirt on, and refused to remove it. He also managed to forgot his Ninja boots, and as a result, had to wear my black slipper-like shoes that I thankfully had on that day. Otherwise he would have been in large white running shoes, a good Ninja look indeed. The ground was rather muddy from rainfall earlier in the day, mixed with fallen leaves. Kyle didn't want to go barefoot, and instead wore sandals, which quite possibly threw him off balance during his front kick. It was a bad day all around for filming! As for choreography, Dhanraj nor I had any ideas. It was as though we were both clueless, even with the hundreds of action sequences choreographed by us to date. We did manage to eventually come up with that mess of a sequence though. It was truly a FAIL all around.
