FAIL - Suitcase Chase Fail

DESCRIPTION:

On the scene shooting Dalewood Production's first project "Mushkil Rishta", Gurpreet grabs a suitcase full of money and tries to make a getaway. The Red Demons quickly catch up with him though, and what follows is a stunt gone wrong as the suitcase goes up in the air and down on Gurpreet's face. He was in pain for a few moments but pushed on to film the rest of the scene, which ultimately got cut in the final edit anyways.

Production Date - August 2000.

BLOG NOTES:

This footage was taken from a Dalewood Productions project called "Mushkil Rishta". Basically in 2000, a bunch of us were just getting out of high school and were looking to expand upon the random fight scene filming we had done in the previous 4 years. Along with Manjit Singh, owner of Dalewood Productions, we decided to put a film together from scratch for just about a zero budget.

We didn't actually have a script, and were coming up with things as we filmed. It took 2 summers to complete, with 50 hours of footage in the end. So of course it was be loaded with many horrible mistakes, bloopers, deleted scenes and so on. Some of which are already uploaded in the Dalewood Productions Playlist of our channel along with the final film itself, others which will appear in future time. This was our first feature film experience, no one involved had any previous experience aside from some backyard and basement fight scenes filmed during high school.

In this particular scene, the heroes of the film are returning money to the Red Demons, money which came into their hands by accident. The Red Demons, a lethal gang of assassins kidnapped the brother of the lead girl in a previous scene, and used him as collateral to make sure the trade off went clean. However, lead character Gurpreet, facing financial problems, attempted to make a last second getaway with the cash, clearly failing.

Not only did the character Gurpreet fail, but the actor himself had a stunt failure when the suitcase was thrown up in the air, proceeding to landed on his face. This was after several other bad takes of course. We just couldn't quite get the timing right, and chances of something horrible happening were increasing with each take. None the less he recovered a few minutes later and we continued. The problem by that point was that we were tired, the actor who got nailed in the head was angry, and everyone else kept talking, resulting in a complete acting fail to finish up the final moments of the scene - some of these moments seen in this upload!

In the end this scene never made the final cut anyhow, but who knows, we may just re-edit this film one day, specifically with online audiences who love cheese in mind, done up to be purposely bad with all the best (worst) acting, bad cuts and blunders possible to make it that much better.

Continuity Errors - Due to our inexperience in cinematography around this time, we filmed much of the chase scene in far wide angle shots. This made it very hard to cut while maintaining a good continuity flow. Take notice to Gurpreet running around the corner of the building, the Red Demons closely following behind. When we cut to the reverse side of the building, the Demons are clearly already past the corner of the building, Gurpreet now along a lot further then he should be, and the sunlight that was falling on the concrete in the previous shot now gone completely, leaving a shaded ground.

Things To Point Out - Note that Gurpreet is supposed to be kicked by me, and then tripped down by the other guy. The problem was, he kept falling after the first kick. After Gurpreet is nailed by the suitcase, I (Ryan - the guy kicking Gurpreet) say, `No Gurpreet, you fell too soon` followed by Gurpreet moaning, knowing he probably has to do this yet again. The final dialogue scenes were continually interrupted by the other actors talking in the background, which is why you hear someone say "Shut up" and the actor turn around to see what's going on. Also notice that in these same shots, the background is nicely in focus, too bad the characters themselves are not.
