BLOG NOTES:

Komodo Kan Karate was started because we had no other ideas at the time. In the previous week we filmed our very first day with "Sensei Bob" (Kyle Strohack), on a white screen backdrop, doing a Martial Arts fitness show. That video still hasn't been put together in post, but will more then likely be done up in future time. As you can tell, we weren't overly thrilled with it, and wanted to begin going in a new direction. In the second week of filming, we wanted to shuffle it up a bit and make things more exciting for everyone. The weather was nice, so we already knew we'd be filming outside. Aside from that we had no idea what to do.

No skits were planned/written at this point, so we decided it would be best to film a few episodes of "over the top" martial arts demonstrations. We knew we could pull off such a thing on the spot, as we had plenty of comedic fight scene experience. There were only a few hours left of daylight, so Kyle, Dhanraj and myself quickly got out to a park and began filming. I had a wide angle lens on the camera for the first time, and it worked out quite well. No one else was in the park and the skies were looking very vibrant. It made for some great landscape/full body shots.

This was the first appearance of Bob's student, "Punching Bag Wang", played by Ryan Dhanraj. I met Dhanraj in a Tae Kwon Do class over 15 years ago. At the time, some of my other friends and I were filming makeshift fight scenes (Which can be seen on our channel in the "Vintage Collection"). We invited him to join us, and we've been friends ever since.

It had been at least 8 years since any of us were involved in any kind of fight scene action at this point though. We generally knew what we were doing, but were very rusty. I was working on choreography, and Dhanraj was taking bumps, putting over Bob. It wasn't going very smooth. It was Kyle's first time doing anything like this, so he was just starting to get the hang of it. I was finding myself out of breath just demonstrating moves to the two of them, and Dhanraj was practically killing himself by falling hard on his shoulder and head while Bob threw him down multiple times. He ended up with some light whiplash, his neck, shoulders and arms were in pain for a few weeks afterward.

Outside of that, things went very well technically. We got more then enough coverage to produce the fake training videos in proper format by showing the moves from an assortment of angles. After finishing the filming of the first 3 episodes, we noticed that the sunset was beginning to look quite impressive. Taking advantage of this, we stood Bob (Kyle) up on a picnic table and filmed him against the sun, performing random katas. This made for the perfect cliched silhouette shot often seen in Martial Arts films. We used these as the title screens in Komodo Kan Karate, and some of these shots appear as stock montage footage in a few more Bob related productions.

Editing was rather smooth, and music was selected from Jason Fyfe's collection - great traditional Japanese sounding material which worked perfectly. The multiple angle breakdown scenes were done in a grainy black and white to set them apart from the main demonstrations, and a strong red tint was added to the silhouette shots to give them a stronger presence. Some dust, cigarette burns and hairs were added to give the visual that vintage film print feel, and the classic sound effects and audio tape hiss & pops completed the overall effect we were going for. This style would continue to be used with some of other other productions, and would improve over time. We are getting quite close to achieving a perfect dirty 16mm film print look. These videos were just the beginning of this practice.
