BLOG NOTES:

This was the first video post on our Youtube channel, and the opening episode of  "Sensei Bob - Expert Martial Artist" comedy series. It was Bob's third day filming with us, so by this point we were all quite comfortable with the character and ready to go in ridiculous directions with it.

While driving to location one of our cars got stuck in a deep country ditch. Being in the middle of nowhere, this could easily have been a disaster for all of us. However Bob himself stepped in and guided the car to safety. Truly amazing. We then got set up, and with exception to other cars getting in the way of some shots, all went well.

We filmed Bob walking out on the street, reacting as though a car were approaching, and then performing a fantastic leap. There were actually two takes of the leap, one which was way too good, so we opted to go with the more pathetic looking of the two. Bob was then instructed to rush out of the shot, and in the same framing, Ophion Digital member Ryan Dhanraj drove his mothers SUV by at full speed.

In post production we simply masked the two shots together, making a very convincing special effect! Most people watching will clearly believe Master Sensei Bob used his superior Karate instinct and jumped the speeding vehicle. The fantastic techno music used to pump the action is by Jason Fyfe, and has become Bob's key score theme.

The hard cut and repeat style editing with film damage filtering is used in some of our videos to add a cheap and slightly vintage offbeat feel, often the result of quick cutting with an old film splicer - human error, poor handling and aging of the film, commonly seen in low budget Martial Arts/Ninja films of the 60's and 70's. We look to perfect this style in time, however sometimes opt to go clean.

Continuity Errors - When Bob is first stepping closer to the street before he crosses, in a wide angle shot, he is framed on the right between two background trees. The next time this angle is seen, he is actually crossing, now framed center, no longer between the two trees.

Things To Point Out - When Bob's close-up shots are shown as he turns to view the oncoming car, another vehicle is seen parked on the side of the road in the background. This is the one that got stuck in the ditch.

  1. "A Komodo is a dragon. Kan means to know. And so Sensei Bob's Komodo Kan Karate shows one to know the art of the dragon. And the art of the dragon is Karate. Karate my way."
